Pecha Kucha Night Beaufort advisory board taking shape

Don't take our lack of blogging as inaction on the Pecha Kucha Night Beaufort front.

In fact, a small group has formed to serve in an advisory capacity for the Pecha Kucha Night Beaufort movement.

We're still confirming a few members of the group, but as we do we'll post their profiles here on the blog.

The first member we'd like to profile is Wendy Walls of the Technical College of the Lowcountry.

Wendy, a native West Virginian, relocated to the Lowcountry two years ago. After graduating from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia with her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Adult and Technical Education, she began her career in higher education by working with low-income, at-risk college students in southern West Virginia. She is now the job placement coordinator at Technical College of the Lowcountry as well as an active member in many civic and professional organizations, including Beaufort Exchange Club, Beaufort Rotary, Lowcountry Young Professionals, National Career Development Association, American Counseling Association and serves as a volunteer for the March of Dimes and American Heart Association.

More profiles to come...

So what is the 'creative class'?

The term 'creative class' has been made most popular by economist, social scientist and author Dr. Richard Florida. Florida has written several books about the 'creative class' and warns that if the United States doesn't do more to foster the growth of this sector then more and more we'll see these individuals leave for overseas.

Florida estimates that there are more than 40 million workers in the 'creative class' in the U.S. - 30 percent of the U.S. workforce - and breaks the class into two groups: the super-creative core and creative professionals.

Within the super-creative core he includes a range of occupations in science, engineering, education, computer programming, research, arts, design and media.

Within the creative professionals group he includes the classic knowledge-based workers in healthcare, business and finance, the legal sector and education.

Here's an additional breakdown of whom and what kinds of employees to consider when thinking of the 'creative class':
  • Preservation and restoration
  • Architecture
  • Urban design
  • Cultural heritage
  • Culinary
  • Visual/graphic arts
  • Performing arts
  • Multimedia/film
  • Digital media/design
  • Publishing/writing
So now that you understand what the 'creative class' is you can have a little bit better idea of what Pecha Kucha is all about.

What is Pecha Kucha, and how is it pronounced?

Well, let's start with the easier part.

Pecha Kucha was founded in Tokyo, Japan in February 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham as a designers' show and tell event to attract more people to a multi-media experimental event space they had set up.

Today Pecha Kucha Nights are held in more than 170 cities across the globe.

The format is simple: Each presenter is allowed 20 slides and only has 20 second to talk about each slide. So each presenter gets 6 minutes and 40 seconds. The kicker is that the presenters aren't in control of when their slide changes, so they're not going any longer than their 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

What Pecha Kucha has become is an opportunity for a community - big or small - to showcase its creative class and bring people and ideas together. That's exactly what we hope to accomplish here in Beaufort.

A date for Pecha Kucha Beaufort is still being determined (we're hoping for this September or October), as is the presenter list. But don't rule yourself out just because you don't paint or sculpt. Pecha Kucha is for chefs, teachers, poets and architects alike.
